This landmark urban regeneration project has transformed what was once an underdeveloped 20-acre area of Manchester into a sustainable, mixed-use neighbourhood. Located between Victoria Station and the Northern Quarter, it brings together offices, homes, retail, hospitality and high-quality public spaces.

Delivering around 4 million square feet of development, NOMA represents a major long-term investment in Manchester’s future. It combines contemporary architecture with sensitively refurbished buildings to create a connected, future-ready business district.

Challenge

As part of NOMA’s evolving commercial spaces, architects and security consultants were tasked with delivering fit-for-purpose, compliant office environments. They had to support modern working practices while maintaining the project’s strong design ethos within 4 Angel Square at NOMA Manchester.

A key challenge was ensuring that access control solutions provided robust security. This had to be done without compromising the quality of 4 Angel Square’s reception. Many factors meant that the building must offer long-term reliability, ease of integration and proven technical performance. Any entrance solution also needed to align with sustainability objectives and integrate seamlessly with wider building systems.

Solution

To address these requirements, Meesons supplied 5 EasyGate SPD-R Speed Gates.

Selected for its ability to balance security performance with architectural quality, the EasyGate SPDs were specified to support high-throughput environments while maintaining a refined and welcoming entrance experience.

The solution was designed to integrate seamlessly within premium reception spaces. This meant ensuring security measures complement the surrounding architecture rather than dominating it. Using Bradley’s Architectural Metal Finishes in Antique Aurichalum, the speed gates tied in with the reception desks and lift panelling, creating a consistent, seamless look across the entire entrance area. Alongside this, 4 Angel Square opted for edge lights to illuminate the speed gates and add a layer of luxury to the finishing look. With a compact footprint and clean design language, the EasyGate SPD Speed Gates aligned with the contemporary interiors found throughout NOMA, supporting the project’s emphasis on high-quality, fit-for-purpose workplaces.

The EasyGate SPD’s flexibility allowed for straightforward integration with third-party access control technologies and wider building management systems. This was put into practice by implementing the lift-to-call integration on the chosen speed gates, offering a user-friendly building experience.

Results

The implementation of EasyGate SPD Speed Gates supports and secure, compliant, and future-ready office environment for 4 Angel Square, at NOMA Manchester. By focusing on technical performance, the ease of integration and design compatibility, the solution helps address the common challenges associated with large-scale mixed-use developments.

The result is an entrance control approach that enhances security while maintaining a welcoming first impression, aligning with NOMA’s sustainable and design-led ethos.
